Выражение впервые появилось в дискуссиях в ходе президентских выборов 1928, когда многие южные демократы [ Southern Democrats] ради сохранения единства партии были готовы поддержать демократа-северянина Смита [ Smith, Alfred Emmanuel (Al)], даже не будучи согласны с его программой. Выдвинули лозунг: "Я проголосую за любого прохвоста, если он выступит по списку демократов" ["I'd vote for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democratic ticket"]. Как пишет У.
